The Ultimate Kyushu Travel Guide: Hot Springs, Scenic Views & Gourmet Itineraries [2026 Edition]

九州観光完全ガイド Kyushu

Hi, I’m Hiro, a travel professional (Certified Domestic Travel Service Supervisor). “Kyushu,” located in the southwest of the Japanese archipelago, is packed with overwhelming nature and healing spots. It is home to Beppu Onsen, which boasts the highest hot spring water output in Japan; the dream destination Yufuin; the mythical Takachiho Gorge; and the World Heritage site Yakushima.

All seven prefectures are unique, including “Fukuoka,” the vibrant gateway to Asia; “Nagasaki,” with its exotic atmosphere; and “Kumamoto,” the Land of Fire. Gourmet food such as Tonkotsu Ramen, Motsunabe, Black Pork (Kurobuta), and free-range chicken is also a major purpose of the trip. In this article, I will provide a complete guide from basic information about Kyushu to must-visit scenic spots and “efficient model courses to fully enjoy the charm of Kyushu.”

1. Basic Information about Kyushu

Geography and Climate

Kyushu is characterized by a warm climate, but snow can fall in mountainous areas and during winter. The northern part tends to have many cloudy days in winter, while the southern part (Miyazaki/Kagoshima) has a Pacific climate, being warm and rainy throughout the year. Since it can be on the path of typhoons, checking the weather forecast is important for travel from summer to autumn.

Average Temperature and Precipitation (Fukuoka)

Here is the annual data for Fukuoka, the largest city in Kyushu. Southern Kagoshima and Miyazaki are warmer than this, but please note that mountainous areas like Aso (Kumamoto) and Yufuin (Oita) can be about 5°C cooler.

Month Avg. Temp (°C) Precipitation (mm) Clothing Guide
Jan6.668Coat, scarf (Down jacket essential for mountains)

Aug28.1172Short sleeves, hat (Sun protection essential)

Hiro’s Tips:
For traveling within Kyushu, the “JR Kyushu Rail Pass” (All Kyushu / Northern Kyushu / Southern Kyushu) issued by JR Kyushu is the best for international visitors. For domestic travelers, limited-time passes like “Minna no Kyushu Kippu” or the highway bus “SUNQ Pass” are convenient. Enjoying designed trains (D&S trains) such as the Limited Express “Yufuin no Mori” or “Kawasemi Yamasemi” between cities is also a real thrill of Kyushu travel.

Hiro’s Safety & Efficiency Summary:
With the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen (Hakata – Kagoshima-Chuo) and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen (Takeo-Onsen – Nagasaki), longitudinal movement has become very smooth. On the other hand, access to mountainous areas like Aso, Takachiho, and Kurokawa Onsen is limited, so using a rental car or sightseeing bus tour is efficient. Mt. Aso may have crater restrictions due to volcanic activity, so check the information in advance.
